DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS FOR THE DIAGNOSIS AND PREVENTION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN AQUACULTURE: APPLICATION OF PROBIOTICS AND BIOACTIVES

Description:

The diversity of aquaculture resources of our planet, as well as the different climates, have led to the development of Aquaculture, which at present has generated an increasing production of fish of different species. However, the species subjected to intensive production conditions that entai! a high population density, low water quality and extreme temperatures, suffer-high rates of mortality.
The present action group intends to lead a project whose main challenge is to reduce the use of antibiotics in animal production, in addition to developing molecular biology techniques for diagnosis of infectious diseases that allow the rapid and precise detection of pathologies that seriously affect the aquaculture sector, so that the prevention methods are established according to the previous diagnosis. An alternative to the use of antibiotics is the use of probiotic microorganisms and / or natural antibacterial substances that we call bioactives. ln this sense, it is intended to find and study activities of polyphenolic compounds of natural extracts of grape skins and olive pomace, and other bioactives of plant origin of interest, on the growth of sensitive and resistant bacteria to antibiotics isolated-from-farm fish, as well as to determine whether these probiotics and bioactives could provide some therapeutic benefit when they are administered in animal models of human diseases.
